Alain is a trailblazer in the world of digital map making. He was the first to create a digital map on a PC in the early 80s, the first to use mobile mapping vans to capture an accurate picture of the real road network and the first to incorporate crowd sourced data to improve map quality. Alain is the original digital map maker. He headed up Tele Atlas, the global map making company, from 1990 until it was acquired by TomTom in 2008.
Alain’s approach to map making paved the way for the modern, digital maps we know today. He laid the foundation for new, innovative ways to create real-time maps capable of powering the most demanding applications such as autonomous driving in the future.
Alain graduated as an engineer-architect from the University of Ghent.
